The Royal Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire was the venue for today’s Championship Show, organised and run by the Midland Irish Setter Society. With so many shows available to each breed and with breed entry numbers so low, the bare bones of it all, has got to be our unique breed standard and the number of puppies being produced, shown & judged and by whom. We will be competing against sustainability, the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level and what will become known as the new “norm” whatever that may mean or be. We have to ask ourselves, is it possible to maintain such standards with limited knowledge, experience and genes?
I thank the Committee of MISS for their hospitality and generosity in hosting an enjoyable day and thank the spectators and exhibitors for the appreciation and atmosphere felt. As an organisation or society, it isn’t an easy task these days, to anticipate an outcome, so well done MISS for the day, also to my Stewards Stephanie Woods and Lillie Peters for their support and efficiency all day, thank you.
From a breed perspective, the numbers were low, especially with only one sex to judge, it did allow for focus on the one gender, in its own right. My vision is and always has been, balance, refined with both quality & substance without coarseness. I felt my line up and also with some classes, my placings gave me this. However, as a general observation, I did feel heads appeared to be worthy in profile but then lacked on holding and looking at them face on. Refinement and that unique expression you get, when the eye, brow and expression talks to you with true Irish charisma was misplaced, hopefully not lost. On the whole, most of the dogs were in fine coat and finish, using the whole ring with ease, when requested to move. It is an expensive hobby, so every little bit counts in tough competition, a brush and some muscle can carry a dog a long way.
My main winners pleased me and not so dissimilar to each other, which can only be a good thing. When it came to BOB, it was very unfortunate that the Bitch CC winner had left her “in season” kennel mate at home, which in turn had my Dog CC winner on his toes, well his handler, if not the dog, who lost all hope of anything further, sad to say. Although I wasn’t against the bitch, she had a lot going for her, I just felt in comparison, the dog was better coupled and balanced and when focussed, moved with purpose over and above the bitch. I was therefore accepting of the Referee to award her choice for the bitch. For Reserve Best in Show, my poor dog then further challenged by the RCC bitch, at the tail end of her season, so now flummoxed and perplexed, my dog’s owner/handler had to endure further pain in holding him back; well done David, for hanging on in there for RBIS. Naturally, the BIS Bitch took Best Veteran in Show and Best Puppy in Show, went to the bitch.
Baby Puppy Dog 1(0)
1st Need’s, Covarney Mighty Quinn With Stourford BBP A young pup, full of character, preferring to stack flat on his side, on the floor. However, he did give a good shape doing so and he enjoyed himself being coy and or naughty in the process. I am sure his owner handler will have him in good order when the serious time comes for showing. He possesses a balanced head and good body properties, bone and condition, with a nice steady pace when asked to move.
Minor Puppy Dog 3(1)
1st Poole’s Gwendariff Ring Aring Aroses (IKC) a raw young man, with plenty of time to mature and fill his frame as he develops. A tad too steady on the move, however, his raciness won him his class.
2nd Hardy’s Cafotaliena Play With Fire, although more mature than his competition, he wasn’t quite as balanced throughout, not helped due to being slightly overly keen on the move, losing his outline and tail carriage.
Puppy Dog 2(0)
1st Neill & Ellrich’s Gwendariff The Nude Dude (IKC) BPD a well put together young dog, with good bone, feet and limbs, clean topline over firm body properties, in good coat and condition, giving a slightly over enthusiastic, but sound, pace on the move.
2nd Hyslop’s Gwendariff Little White Lie (IKC) I liked the stamp of this pup, as with my winner. He has good attributes but currently not quite shown to his advantage, I am sure, in time, it will all fall into place for him. He gives just enough to carry him, but will need that little bit more, if he is to trouble the others.
Veteran Dog 4(1)
1st Hemmings’ Sh.Ch. Orlanset A New Flame CC RBIS. Amazingly for me, a dog that has never been on my radar. Whenever he was shown, he was just there and I was very surprised how misread he has been for me, not to have caught my eye before today. He is a good size and stamp of a dog, all in proportion, neither flashy nor exaggerated, quite honest throughout, with everything in the right place. Handsome in head, balanced with a good eye and finish to foreface, giving me that desired expression, which many, I fear, lack these days. A dog with both depth of chest, well ribbed back and proportionate firm loin and quarters. Nothing heavy about him, yet masculine with good angulation to good boned limbs and feet, used to his advantage when asked to move. There is quality and depth of coat and my easy top award winner today and more good days ahead of him, I am sure.
As already mentioned, such a shame to have been distracted by canine femineity desire, as I did constructively feel him the better of the two specimens for BOB and not wanting to take it away from the bitch, I therefore accepted the Referee, along with my Co Judge, to make their choice.
2nd Pym, Bott & Millighan-Bott’s Thendara Marshmello JW SHCEX OSW VW a worthy 2nd place for this well put together masculine dog, full of strength and vigour.
3rd Holehan-Green’s Loganrish Lets Go Crazy
Junior Dog 3(0)
1st Foster’s Ixia Boy’s Don’t Cry At Shanoah. An attractive young dog, his type and qualities appealed. Refined head properties, still very much on the change and to develop, but correct for this age. Steady and straight on the move, with sufficient animation and influence.
2nd Clarke’s Riverbrue Gives You Hell, very similar remarks as above, for this young male. He has everything in the right place and carries the qualities one desires and again, he wants time to develop and mature. Needs to steady on the move to give himself a more confident and animated profile.
3rd Randle’s Rionore Bewitching Memory
Yearling Dog 6(0)
1st Hemmings Orlanset Slave to Love, For me, my winner is still, a well-covered young dog in good coat and perhaps still in the frame of a junior, but this couldn’t deny him his win. An attractive head and expression, good bone and body properties. I noticed, looking at my catalogue after my judging, he is sired by my CC winner; as with his sire, this dog is unexaggerated and felt good to go over him.
2nd Crocker & Frost’s Ronaldo Lofty At Riverbrue (Imp Pol) A taller more rangier male and quite different to the winner, possibly due to his rugged leanness and movement. An attractive dog, he catches your eye and everything seems to be in the correct place, he moves with gusto. I just feel slightly, that less would be more for me.
3rd Mathews’ Gwendariff Stupid Cupid NAF
Maiden Dog 0(0)
Novice Dog 2(0)
1st Mathews’ Gwendariff Stupid Cupid NAF a nicely presented and content young dog, both stacked and on the move, needs time to mature to make the best of himself.
2nd Randle’s Rionore Bewitching Memory, a substantial young dog with type and interest, sadly not in top form or moving his best to have taken his classes.
Undergraduate Dog 3(0)
1st Sheldon’s Bardonhill That’s All Right At Delsanto, good size and condition with a balanced head and throughout, he is clean and uncomplicated with a firm neck into shoulders and topline. He could improve his outline if slightly stacked out a tad further and had a little more animation on the move.
2nd Randle’s Rionore Bewitching Memory
3rd Harris’ Fairhaven Young Soul For Konakakela (Imp Swe) JW
Graduate Dog 3(0)
1st Sheldon’s Bardonhill That’s All Right At Delsanto
2nd Holehan-Green’s Loganrish Tiger Warrior JW. A slightly rangier different stamp of a dog to the winner and worthy of changing places on another day. Well presented and in firm condition.
3rd Box’s It’s Now Or Never for Fernstart
Post Graduate Dog 9(1)
1st Bentley’s Penclippin Jubilee Flame JW Three good males from a good class of differing males. This dog scored on his honesty and substance with good bone and cover. Impartial and clean throughout, but he does need to be pulled up and forward, keeping his nose down to firm him up throughout.
2nd Levene & Lewis Quensha Remember The Name Valasarch, another good dog and he does catch my eye. However, similar comments as the winner, he needs to be up and over with his head, as opposed to being pulled forward. He is well ribbed, deep and firm throughout, would prefer him slightly racier to finish.
3rd Russell’s Tiroen Touch of Magic By Settesoli (Imp KCJ)
Mid Limit Dog 4(0)
1st Lucas’ Gwendariff Bachelor Boy. A stylish, well bodied confident male, both stacked and on the move, with a good coat and finish, if not a tad cut up in loin. He is firm throughout and catches the eye.
2nd Berry, Morris & Fitzmaurice’s Brinara Country Boy, I liked his type and honesty, nothing overrated. He has a kind balanced head and soft expression with clean lines. Although sound and steady, he needs to be more animated to improve his overall demeanour.
3rd Cohen’s Lynwood Merry May King With Shushanna
Limit Dog 5(1)
1st Kolbach’s Kerryfair Zoom In On Pawsword RCC. A dog very much the type and stamp I would like, however, what a nightmare he is for both his handler and myself today. I can resonate with her on how frustrating it is, to have an animal in your hands, who doesn’t stand for more than five seconds. A good balanced and expressive head, he has bone and muscle, nicely angulated for and aft when stacked or on the move, with a racy outline, albeit momentarily. Thank you for turning him when you did, as he nearly lost it for us both.
2nd Bott’s Bardonhill Million To One. An imposing and masculine male with good substance, confirmation, coat and condition, he possesses both bone and sound movement.
3rd Green’s Loganrish Out On The Town JW
Open Dog 5(0)
A lovely class of well respected, mature males, all worthy title holders in their own right. Additionally, all could change places on another day. I always feel good, if you are challenged, when assessing a class of mature quality and equal contenders and I thank all their respective owner/handlers for the honour.
1st Beresford’s Sh.Ch. Jetsetter Wind of Dreams (Imp Rus) A quality dog with both style and substance. For me, he has improved with age, good depth of chest and rib to firm loin, using himself, moved soundly. Although his head is typey and catches the eye, some definition would be desirable, however, this doesn’t deny him the class.
2nd Neill & Ellrich’s Sh.Ch. & Ir. Sh.Ch.Gwendariff Sky Diver (IKC) This dog is well produced and has both good bone and substance, he is turned out to perfection and commands the attention both stacked and on the move. He has good body properties, with good angulations and bone, lovely clean, presented coat and finish. Compliments must go to his owner/groomer, as a few dogs today, were denied these basic principles and necessities for a showing hobby.

Bitches
Big thanks to the committee, my wonderful stewards & of course the exhibitors & exhibits, all helped to make this an amazing day. I thoroughly enjoyed judging this pleasing entry of bitches, which displayed good overall quality and for the most part, conformed well to the breed standard. Many presented balanced outlines with good depth throughout, the majority possessed feminine heads with the typical soft, melting expression so characteristic of the breed. Temperaments were super
BPB (3)
A delightful trio of young ladies all a pleasure to assess and taking everything in their stride. 1 Turner’s Dazycutter Thegirlsonfire, this 4 mth little poppet caught my eye immediately on the first move around the ring, on examination she has the most appealing head and an expression that melted me, correct front assembly, lovely balance throughout, well developed quarters for one so young and just oozes breed type. Once she settled from her puppy enthusiasm she moved truly on a nice, even stride, so together for such a baby, she should have a bright future. 2 Mutch’s Astleyview Dazzeling Moon a sweet, feminine 5mth girl just entering her leggy stage but with lots to like, pretty head and dark expressive eyes, well bodied, she made a nice picture when standing but not quite as together on the move today as the winner. 3 Hurman & Tippett’s Empyreansky Aurora Faye.
MPB(3,1)
1 Stevenson’s Gwendariff Crackling Rosie for Lochlorien 7.5mths, well grown for age, she has a pretty head of good planes with a sweet expression, nicely balanced with good depth of body and ribs carried well back, pleasing angulation fore and aft, had a tendency to crab a little today, but in profile had a lovely stride & maintained her outline carrying & using her tail well. A promising baby. 2 Prangle’s Heathclare Faberge 7½ months, of lovely colour and pleasing type, slightly stronger in head than 1 though still feminine and attractive, shows good depth of body for her age but not quite as developed behind as 1 at this stage, another pleasing puppy who should continue to improve with maturity.
P(8,1)
1 Bott’s Bardonhill As You Like It adored much about this quality 10mth young lady, she is so feminine loved her head & melting soft expression, well balanced and pleasingly proportioned throughout, showing good substance without losing refinement, super front assembly & strong quarters, moved with an easy, true efficient stride, keeping a firm topline for one so young, bpb & over the moon that my co judge agreed on her being awarded BPIS. 2 1st in mpb. 3 Green, Holehan-Green & Selby’s Loganrish Winter Pearl Moon.
V(9,3)
1. Hunter’s SHCH/INT SHCH Fairhaven Electra an outstanding quality girl who belies her 8½yrs, she’s in fabulous coat & condition & has true breed type, so feminine throughout with a beautiful head & soft expression, excellent for balance and proportions, she retains both substance and elegance, soundly constructed fore and aft and moves with ease, purpose and true Irish Setter style holding her topline and carrying herself with the confidence and presence of a seasoned showgirl, a pleasure to judge & she just never stopped showing, couldn’t deny her the CC, delighted when she was awarded BIS & therefore BVIS on the referee decision. 2 Hadfield’s Covarney Estée Avec Marzanne 7.5yr old who was unlucky to meet the winner on the day, she too has lovely breed type and was presented in excellent condition, so balanced throughout, lovely arch to her neck which flows into an excellent front assembly. A little playful on the move initially but soon settled allowing me to appreciate her sound construction and true movement. 3.Edward’s SHCH Gwendariff It’s Numero Uno At Bonhomie.
J(5)
1 Mutch’s Astleyview Crimson Moon classic head with lovely low set ears & endearing soft expression, clean balanced outline with good depth, she is well put together & presented in super condition, most efficient mover in this class showing a positive front action with good reach as her construction would suggest. 2 Godart’s Riverwood X’si Bitsy Teenie Weenie JRCH (bel), such a pretty feminine girl who has a clean balanced outline, so well put together & immaculately presented, on my initial look & on taking them around the ring together I thought she could be my winner but on further examination she wasn’t quite as positive as 1 coming towards but totally deserved her place & this should improve with age. 3 Bouttell & Burbridge’s Ixia The Love Cats.
YB(9,1)
1 Berry & Morris’ Riverbrue Mystique Avec Brinara JW she appealed for her overall type, displaying a soft, gentle expression on a feminine head of good planes, clean through the neck with well-placed shoulders and good return of upper arm, strong quarters with adequate turn of stifle, not in her best jacket today, however she moved out efficiently and true which won her the class, a very sound girl. 2 Hadfield’s Marzanne’s Happy Returns different type to 1 but still appealed, pleasing head and expression, clean through the neck with sound construction throughout, adequate angles fore and aft and moved out well enough to confirm her overall soundness. just preferred the overall type and movement of the winner on the day. 3 Harrison’s Clonageera Summer Dreams at Mill point JW.
MB(2)
1 Childs’ Gwendariff Grace Kelly 4th in a lovely pb class, she’s still immature but very appealing & has everything there, preferred her overall type to 2, well constructed front assembly, adequate depth, strong topline, well bent stifles, so happy on the move enjoying her day. 2 Taylor’s Dendroch Anne Frank more mature and stronger all through than 1 & is more mature but lacking slightly in upper arm, excellent depth throughout and a holds a good topline, strength through quarters & stands on super neat feet, presented in good condition.
NB(5)
1 as mb. 2 Allum’s Zakhan’s Sky Dancer Del Macarica not quite as racy as 1 but lots to like, pretty head with kind soft expression & good earset, well constructed & balanced throughout with no exaggerations, such a sound girl & this showed on the move. 3 Hurman & Tippett’s Empyrean sky Aurora Faye.
UGB(5,2)
1 Jones’s Gwendariff Rihanna JW quality bitch of excellent breed type who appealed immediately, feminine head with a lovely soft expression & a cheeky glint, balanced throughout with good depth and correct angles, moved soundly and positively, holding her outline well, liked her a lot just needs a little more time to complete the picture. 2 Rutherford’s Clonageera Summer Moments JW, a little shorter in muzzle than 1 but has super dark eyes giving her a melting expression, ears well set, clean strong neck, good depth throughout & well sprung ribs, she moves soundly as her construction would suggest just lacked a little enthusiasm today. 3 Evans & Lloyd-Jones’s Clonageera Honey Honey at Blodaugoch.
GB(6)
1 Holehan-Green’s Loganrish Tiger Lily Pearl a pleasing young bitch of good breed type, she has a well-shaped feminine head with a soft, appealing expression, clean and elegant through the neck and shoulders, has good depth to chest and a balanced outline throughout, well constructed behind and lovely muscle tone, on the move she covered the ground efficiently, maintaining balance and purpose holding her topline & using her tail. 2 Bentley’s Penclippin Celtic Asthorne JW close decision between these 2, lovely type, with a classic head and kind dark eyes, textbook front assembly & quarters to match, good depth & balanced throughout, lovely dark coat of good texture unlucky to meet in such good form. 3 Mitchell’s Kerry fair Misty Love for Amblin.
PGB(9,4)
1 Condron & Needs’ Covarney Mini Minx, this bitch is a picture of elegance but has substance & strength throughout, classic outline, shoulders well back, lovely length & return of upperarm, pleasing depth through a body of correct length, well turned stifle on sound firm quarters, classic topline stood, covered the ground well with a precise footfall showing pleasing reach & drive. 2 Hardy’s Cafotaliena She’s On Fire another pleasing girl, a little more finished and mature than 1 she possesses good front construction and balanced angles throughout, pretty head with a pleasing expression and well-defined brow, just lacks the overall length of rib of 1, but still a sound well put-together bitch which really shows on the move, was nit picking here. 3 Milligan-Bott, Bott & Smith’s Thendara Graff Venus.
MLB(4)
1 Rutherford & Prangle’s Clonageera Summer Moments JW sound well bodied young lady who is a little stronger in head than some but has well shaped dark eyes & low set ears, pleasing over skull, strong clean neck with a lovely arch, liked her front construction, plenty of heart room, good turn of stifle on strong quarters which she used well on the move, lovely rich mahogany coat in super condition completed the picture. 2 McDonald’s Quensha Galway Girl preferred her head proportions to 1 but has slightly rounder eye shape, a lovely well balanced girl who has good length of upperarm & well placed shoulders, pleasing depth throughout, strong topline with a gentle slope, another sound mover, just preferred front action of 1. 3 Rorke’s Zakhan’s Diamond Queen JW.
L(7)
1 Bott, Allen & Morgan’s Quensha Joker And The Queen appealed for overall size & type, she has an attractive lean feminine head, well-constructed front assembly with correct return of upper arm and balanced angles throughout, lovely depth of forechest, strong quarters provide plenty of drive on the move, covering the ground with an easy free stride and maintaining a pleasing outline, just lost her concentration & sparkle in the challenge. 2 Dale’s Trefaine Aurora of Aubanjon classic racy balanced girl with so many lovely qualities, her dreamy expression just melted me, clean elegant lines throughout, her correct sound construction really showed on the move, she holds a good topline & really uses her tail pleasing reach & drive & faultless footfall, just preferred overall proportions of 1. 3 Bouttell & Burbridge’s Ixia Snow Vixen.
O(6,2)
what a headache this class gave me but what a position to be in, the 4 girls were super & all had much to admire, in the end I was really nit-picking. 1 Hall’s Glennara Cherry Cola JW, the more I studied this bitch the more she appealed, such an honest girl who oozes breed type built on a slightly bigger frame than some but still so feminine, her head is so typical of the breed with well defined brow and a soft melting expression, clean through a neck of good length which flows into well laid shoulders, correct return of upper arm, she has good depth of brisket, pleasing spring of ribs carried well back, firm topline held both standing and on the move, strong well muscled quarters with good width of second thigh and correct turn of stifle, stands on neat well knuckled feet, on the move she covered the ground with an easy, fluent stride, true coming and going, maintaining her topline, gave it all in the challenge to win the RCC. 2 Jones’ ShCh Gwendariff Dazzling Diva JW a worthy second to the winner, she has many of the same qualities, pretty head with correct planes and sweet expression, balanced throughout & easy to see why she has her title, she just lacked the overall scope and presence of 1 today, but soundly constructed and true on the move covering the ground with an easy stride. 3 Int ShCh Riverwood The Devil Wears Prada JrCh.
